History

In the Hsinchu area, during the reign of Qing Emperors Qianlong (1736-1795) and Jiaqing (1796-1820), local well wishers and property owners independently or jointly built canals to meet the needs of daily life and farming. After Japan occupied Taiwan in 1895, it formulated Regulations on Public Irrigation Canals and incorporated private canals into public canal works after which the canal system underwent several changes and restructuring.

Japanese occupation era
  • In March 1923, Hsinchu, Zhudong, Maoerding and Xinpu Irrigation Cooperatives were established.
  • On February 15, 1940, Zhudong, Maoerding and Xinpu Irrigation Cooperatives were merged into Hsinchu Irrigation Cooperative.
Republic of China era
  • In November 1946, the Hsinchu Irrigation Cooperatives was renamed the Hsinchu Irrigation Coordination Association.
  • On January 13, 1948, it was renamed Hsinchu Irrigation Committees.
  • On January 1, 1956, it was renamed Hsinchu Irrigation Association.
  • On January 1, 1975, the three irrigation associations of Hsinchu, Zhunan and Miaoli merged to form Xinmiao Irrigation Association.
  • On June 1, 1982, Xinmiao Irrigation Association was divided into Miaoli Irrigation Association and Hsinchu Irrigation Association.
  • On October 1, 2020, it was re-designated the Hsinchu Management Office, Irrigation Agency, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan.
  • On August 1, 2023, it was reorganized into the Hsinchu Management Office, Irrigation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture.
